Where did the idea of GTA Hydro inc. originate from
In Quebec, in the early 1990's, the second phase of the James Bay was ending. Faced with little available work, the main actors in the hydroelectric field left to reorient themselves in information technologies, which at the time were the next big thing. This shift created a void of ressources specialized in the hydroelectric field. In 2015, many of the remaining experienced personnel have retired and the new actors have approximately 10 years of experience in the field.
Consulting services in the engineering related to hydraulic turbine and generator comes from many different sources. Qualified ressources are currently spread between small, medium and mostly large consulting firms. There are also a few independent contractors on the market.
The sector has achieved maturity and new powerhouse project announcements in North-America are slowing down. The client needs are shifting to maintenance, repairs and rehabilitation. For some power producers, the redevelopment of existing sites is also a possibility.
Given the growing need for optimal return on investment, the current tendency is to run units until failure occurs, rather then investing in preventive log term maintenance. The need for large studies is replaced by urgent repair works.
Very few firms posses the reel expertise required to understand and respond to clients during urgent situations. Generally speaking, power producers sub-contract the engineering services and the maintenance of their units. They look for, and trust, the external suppliers who offer the best quality to price ratio.
In this context, GTA Hydro holds a unique and advantageous position as a firm that possesses the required expertise and that benefits from a network of contacts and suppliers who are adapted to this new reality.
